Kurt Eggers
Kurt Eggers was a German writer and member of the Waffen-SS. The passionate nationalism in his early works soon brought him into contact with National Socialist circles, and he joined the circle of poets around Josef Goebbels. At the beginning of the war in 1939, Eggers, following his martial ideal, enlisted as a reserve officer on the front and served in the SS until he was killed in action near Bjelograd at the age of 37.
In this autobiographical novel, Eggers relates his experience studying theology, as a member of a student fraternity (Vandalia Rostock) and in the service of the Mecklenburg Regional Church, as well as his life in the war. The Step Out of Line is a sort of revolutionary autobiography in which the author seeks to inspire the younger generation – the teenagers who were about fifteen years his junior and preparing for terrible trials by singing: “Today, Germany is listening to us. Tomorrow, the whole world.”
