Hans F. K. Günther’s major work Knight, Death and Devil: The Heroic Idea resurrected the nationalist spirit of the Völkisch movement in the chaotic interwar period as a vitalist “biological nationalism” that greatly influenced the development of National Socialist ideology. Building on this ideological foundation, Günther’s later academic research helped to define our current understanding of racial ethnography, human biodiversity, and eugenics.
