Georges Dumezil

Georges Dumezil was a French philologist, linguist and religious studies scholar who specialized in comparative linguistics and mythology. This work is a comprehensive discussion of the religion of ancient Rome, complete in one volume. The first part begins with preliminary remarks about the established evidence used in research on the subject in question. Dumezil then goes on to discuss Ancient Theology, with focuses on The Capitoline Triad, public worship, frameworks and the functions of religion. The second part discusses the ‘Extensions and Mutations’ of Ancient Roman religion, such as the Gods of the Merchants and religion during the Second Punic War, also touching on the existence of private cults.
